Orchid Supplies
As is true with any trade, any profession and any hobby; certain supplies are needed to insure that the job gets done properly, effectively and efficiently.
In other words, you need to have the proper tools of the trade on hand and within an easy arm’s reach.
That fact is also true when it comes to growing and cultivating orchids, whether as a professional or commercial grower of thousands of plants or a mere hobbyist who nurtures a smaller number of orchid plants scattered about the house or a private nursery.
The supplies which are used by orchid growers are wide and varied and I am sure that each grower may have a few pet supplies which he or she claims that they simply cannot do without. If you are a beginner, however, you should first concentrate on those which are most vital.
Here is one expert’s opinion as shown in the following very helpful video:
With the purchase or acquisition of your first orchid plant, please consider also acquiring the following handful of essentials which will make your experience as a grower of orchids a success:
- You will most likely need to re-pot your orchid plant once a year and so you should have a set of pots ready and awaiting. I suggest that plain terra cotta pots are quite adequate because they are inexpensive and they will not pull attention away from the beauty of the plant, especially when it’s in bloom.
- Orchid plants need a light potting soil that allows a sufficient flow or air around the roots and such soil should contain perlite or vermiculite.
- Every living organism needs to be fed. Feed your orchid with a fertilizer that consists of a nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
- Orchids love humidity and so your pots should be standing atop humidity trays and the leaves of the plants should be misted with water between regular watering which should come every 7 or so days.
- Your orchids need sufficient lighting but no direct sunlight. You might consider acquiring special growing lights which are the optimal way of control the plant’s exposure to lighting.
- Most orchids need vertical support for their blooming stems and so you should have sticks and ties or purchase orchid mounts which are actually preferable.
- Having a pair of good pruning snips will help you control the appearance of your plant.
- No matter how well you care for your orchids, they might every so often be attacked by pests such as spiders, mites, slugs, snails and scale bugs. Your best option is acquiring a good organic insecticide.
