Of course you could spend hundreds and even thousands of dollars on orchid plants and on the orchid supplies for growing them but that would really not be necessary to become a successful orchid grower.

If you are a beginner who has just started your journey, than I would highly advise that you limit yourself to only the essential orchid supplies which are really all that you will ever need.

Take your time, get a feel for the art or craft of growing orchids before progressing to the more advanced stuff that requires the fancier supply items which are, needless to say, more costly.  Until then, stick with the basics.

So, what are the essential supplies and where should you shop for them?

Well, you first have to purchase the orchid plants and the best place to shop for those is through professional orchid sellers because that is where you will find the greatest variety, the healthiest plants and a wealth of how-to advice.

If possible, get a list of 3 or 4 recommended orchid sellers in your area and visit their facility. Get a feel for their professionalism, their plants and, of course, their prices. Also, don’t forget to pick their brains with as many questions as you can come up with.

Often orchid sellers also sell the essential supplies you will need but their prices may be higher than if you buy in broader base nurseries and greenhouses, hardware stores, home improvement centers, online vendors. Your list of essential supplies should include:

• Terra cotta pots of varying sizes
• Potting soil that contains perlite or vermiculite
• Fertilizer that is especially formulated for orchids and consists of the proper measures of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
• Humidity trays to accommodate each pot or larger trays to accommodate a number of pots.
• A spray bottle.
• Support sticks with ties or orchid mounts.
• Good quality pruning snips.
• Organic or chemical insecticide.

When you’ve become more comfortable with your orchid plants and when you have some extra money on hand to spend on them, you might want to then consider acquiring a self watering device, aqua stakes, glass globes, plant sitters, water siphons and growing lights.

The video below will give you a beautifully visual and auditory idea where to begin
shopping for your orchid supplies, some of what you will need and the end results
of your diligence — the most fabulous orchids.

You have to start comparison shopping somewhere and I would advise that you begin with the following:

Amazon.com
eBay.com
Armstrong Garden Centers
Better Than Nature
Charley’s Greenhouse
RePotme.com
Home Depot
Lowe’s
